With the operation of a new Beijing airport in 2019, China will build a comprehensive airport cluster comprising of the new Beijing airport, Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), Tianjin Binhai International Airport (TSN), and Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport (SJW) in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
"In order to adapt to China's 'One Belt and One Road' initiative and strengthen the competitive advantage, we will build a world-class airport cluster in 2030," said Liu Xuesong, general manager of Capital Airport Holding Company at the Beijing Global Sister Airport President Forum on Sep. 10.
According to a document which revealed key information of an outline of the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, a world-class megalopolis will be formed with better economic structure, cleaner environment and improved public service ability.
"A world-class airport cluster will emerge to serve the world-class megalopolis," said Liu. "The document also puts forward to speed up the construction of a world-class aviation hub."
The new Beijing airport will be put into operation in 2019, and according to the preliminary plan, the new Beijing airport is positioned as a major integrated hub airport, coupled with the Beijing Capital Airport to form a dual airport system in Beijing.
Meanwhile, the airports in Tianjin and Shi Jiazhuang are developing rapidly. In the first half of this year, Shijiazhuang airport handled 204,000 passengers, surging 83.8 percent year on year, with its international routes increasing 55.6 percent to 14. To date, Tianjin airport has handled 9.19 million passengers, up 17.5 percent year on year. It is expected to serve 14 million passengers this year, said the airport authority.
In addition, Tianjin airport, which now has 13 city terminals in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, is planning to expand the number to 20 by the end of this year.
The four airports located in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province are going to realize integrated development and achieve optimized benefits.
