Airports Council International – European region ( ACI Europe), an association representing Europe’s airports with over 500 airport members in 45 states, has published a statement in the wake of tragic events in Brussels. It summarises experience of European airports in security provision.
Moscow Domodedovo Airport - a member of this highly reputable international organization since 1994 - fully shares the Council’s opinion that the only effective way forward in the fight against terrorism is a comprehensive set of measures.
ACI Europe’s official statement points out that security of landside spaces (airport spaces accessible to the general public) falls under the remit of competent public authorities as this territory is no different from any other public space – such as train and metro stations, theatres, department stores, museums, etc.
‘Aviation-specific security regulations focus on the airside spaces (non-public spaces of airports accessible only to air passengers who hold a valid boarding pass). These regulations are designed to prevent unlawful interference with air transport – a prominent target of terrorists for several decades,’ reads the statement.
Apart from that, ACI Europe underlines that checks on persons and goods entering airport landside spaces could lead to high congestion before the checkpoints and actually create new security vulnerabilities for the transport infrastructure facility and people.
