More than 160 passengers on a Lufthansa Airbus have escaped injury after four tyres blew out during an emergency landing in Mumbai, India.

The flight from Munich, Germany, touched down at 10.50pm on Friday (local time), reportedly 30 minutes earlier after the pilot declared an emergency due to a landing gear issue.

It's not clear what caused flight LH764's emergency, or what the reason was for the tyres to blow out, but the German national carrier said none of the 163 passengers were injured, Prahaar Online News reported.

Photos of the plane show at least one of the tyres had dissolved, while others were badly damaged.

To compound the issue, the plane couldn't be moved until new tyres were fitted, meaning the main runway at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport was still shut after 15 hours, the Economic Times reported.

The incident caused several flights to be diverted, delayed or forced them to offload cargo so they could take off from a shorter secondary runway.

It is unclear when the runway will reopen.
