Caribbean Airlines (BW, Port of Spain) is proceeding with plans to phase out its only widebody equipment while simultaneously abandoning transatlantic flights to London Gatwick with effect from January 10 of next year.

In a statement, the Trinidadian carrier said it had taken the decision following a detailed review of its network which took into consideration the current competitive environment.

"This has not been an easy decision, since the airline’s customers have loyally supported the London service especially in the peak periods," it said. "Unfortunately, the costs associated with maintaining the B767-300 (ER) aircraft operation, has led Caribbean Airlines to the decision of simplifying its fleet and focusing its limited resources to build connectivity in the North American and Caribbean markets."

Flights to the United Kingdom were axed in 2010 only to be resurrected in 2012.

Both B767s - 9Y-LGW (msn 26327) and 9Y-LHR (msn 27597) - are to be returned to AerCap during the first quarter of next year.

Though earlier reports had already confirmed the move, official confirmation was only given following last month's general elections which saw the opposition People's National Movement (PNM) claiming victory.
