All Nippon Airways (ANA) has confirmed that it has ordered three Airbus A380s that will be used on its Tokyo-Honolulu route.

Parent company ANA Holdings says in a statement that the aircraft will be used to strengthen its position in the leisure and resort markets.

“The A380 allows us to efficiently expand seating capacity at a lower cost per seat while offering a flexible range of cabin classes,” it adds.

ANA says that the aircraft are being acquired for around Y150 billion ($1.2 billion), and will be delivered during the 2018 and 2019 fiscal years.

The order is part of the carrier’s latest medium-term corporate strategy, which calls for the ANA Group’s fleet to grow to around 300 aircraft by the end of March 2021, compared to 258 at the end of the current fiscal year.
