Ex-Change Parts achieves 100% sustainability in helicopter recycling
Ex-Change Parts AB announced the achievement of 100% sustainability in helicopter recycling. This landmark reinforces Ex-Change Parts’ leadership position in the global rotary-wing MRO marketplace. As sustainability is brought into ever-sharper focus across the aerospace industry, Ex-Change Parts seized the opportunity to take a lead. At the heart of this initiative, a conscious choice was made to maximize the re-use and recycling of every part and component from the helicopters handled. Partnerships with specialist organizations for component overhaul and material recovery are key to this process.
After the recovery of every aviation part from an airframe, Ex-Change Parts passes the remainder to recycling specialists for further handling and input to the raw materials supply chain. Examples of these processes include separating alloys to base metals and grinding up fiberglass insulation. Ultimately, Ex-Change Parts ensures that 100% of the aircraft materials are responsibly re-used or recycled, ensuring zero waste through the processes used by the company.
Rikard Jansson, CEO Ex-Change Parts commented: “We utilize a differential fragmentation process, which allows for precise material separation. Helicopter airframes, which contain significant amounts of aluminium and other valuable metals, are processed in a way that optimizes their recovery and reintroduction into the supply chain.”
Ex-Change Parts’ Sustainability project plan is paving the way for change and Göran Enström, Head of Business Development, explains: “Ex-Change Parts is not just embracing sustainability; but leading the charge for a more eco-conscious helicopter industry. Our comprehensive sustainability project plan is designed to make a noticeable improvement to the helicopter supply chain market.Through innovation, collaboration, and responsible practices, we aim to set new standards that prioritize both environmental well-being and operational excellence.”
The recent disassembly of five AS332 Super Pumas successfully recovered 60% (by weight) of components for direct re-use and MRO support, extending the economic life and reducing the downtime of other helicopters. The environmental impact of opting for pre-owned parts significantly brings the financial benefits of reduced operating costs and maintenance time. The wider availability of key items from Ex--Change Parts ensures prompt supply and a reduction in aircraft down-time.
